Geocache Description:

Findlater Castle is a ruined 14th Century castle built into a cliff. The approach involves a descent then steep ascent on a narrow path. Be aware that the cache is near the castle but not in it. You will have to take the path to it and there are steep drops to either side at times. If you take children or dogs please keep them by you under strict control or don't take them



Please do not attempt this cache without considering the risks.
The Castle itself is ruined and on a narrow promontory. There are rooms you can explore which Malinky did, although Skinny stayed outside the ruin because she does have a slight fear of heights and sharp drops. You take your own chances! The drop to the rocks below is not to be sniffed at.
Findlater Castle was first mentioned in 1246 when King Alexander III built castles and repaired others to defend his lands against the Vikings. It was held for some time by the Vikings.
The existing ruin, it is thought, dates back to the mid-late 14th Century. It has had an interesting history including when it was defended successfully against troops belonging to Mary Queen of Scots. It was abandoned after 1600 when the Ogilvies moved to nearby Cullen.

En route you will be able to see the interesting rock strata around here in the cliffs - very similar to those at 'Bow Fiddle Rock.'

Park your car at the sign-posted car park round to the west of the farm. The path to this cache and 'Sunnyside-up' . is easily found. At the top of the cliff you can find an information board which has diagrams of how the Castle looked in its' heyday.

The cache container is a small cylinder screw-top. Beware of baby nettles in the grass when you sit down to enjoy the views, especially in summer when this would be a prime viewing spot for dolphins!
