The view gives you an idea of what the area looked like prior to the construction of the Wanaque Reservoir and the Monkville Reservoir.
The history of the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission dates back to 1916 (source http://www.njdwsc.com/njdw/history2.htm)
1916 - N.J. Legislature on March 16 adopts statute creating the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission to develop, acquire, and operate water supply resources for municipalities within the "North Jersey District" defined as the 12 northernmost counties of the State.
1918 - NJDWSC signs it's first major construction contract with Newark. The initial contract called "for the development of the Wanaque River."
1920 - Construction is started in the Wanaque River in Midvale.
1930 - On March 20th, the Wanaque reservoir is formally placed in operation. Governor Morgan F. Larson delivers the dedication address at the Wanaque ceremony.
1931 - The Wanaque Dam is renamed and dedicated in honor of Newark Mayor and NJDWSC Commissioner Thomas L. Raymond who died in October 1928.
1953 - The Ramapo Project is completed at a cost of $5 million, includes a pump station capable of diverting up to 100 million gallons per day from the Ramapo River at Pompton Lakes to the Wanaque Reservoir.
1972 - NYDWSC conceives of and makes an application to build Monksville Dam to create the 7-billion gallon Monksville Reservoir.
