Ogallala Public Beach
This cache is located near the parking area at the Ogallala Public Beach. They have been clearing trees out in the camping area, so there are lots of piles of branches and such, but this cache is where the trees are still upright (for the most part). If you continue past the trees, you will find the beach area, some picnic tables, primitive camping spots ($6 per night), trash dumpsters and the potties. Unfortunately, due to the drought and high water usage in other areas, this large, man-made reservoir has been highly depleted of water, and there is a LOT more beach area than there used to be. This is a high-muggle area during warm weather, so stealth is necessary. There are also people from “Yacht Club Estates” (the big houses on the hill) who can see you as well, if they are looking at the right time. I found this area when I got turned around looking for some other caches at Big Mac, and thought it should have one too. There are lots of tall weeds, some stickers, as well as fallen branches and other natural debris in the area, so walk carefully. Please re-hide the cache as well as possible using the natural cover. This cache consists of a small round camouflaged plastic container. This is part of the Lake McConaughy SRA, so a park entry permit is required for your vehicle. Daily and annual permits are available at park headquarters at the south end of the dam, or at area stores, if you do not already have one. Daily permits are $3, if you are just passing through. This lake is very scenic, showcasing the Nebraska skies, so a camera could come in handy. There is good fishing as well, but be sure to get off the water early if it looks like stormy weather is building. As always CITO is appreciated.
