This loop trail is located immediately north of the University of Calgary Forest Research Station at Barrier Lake on the Kananaskis Highway (Hwy 40) about 9.1 Kms south of the Trans Canada Hwy.
The 1.5 kilometre Forest Ecology Loop forms part of a series of short trails connecting the Lusk Creek, Stoney Creek and Barrier Dam Recreational Areas. It is an interpretative trail with many interesting information signs. There are also small numbered metal tags around the trail. For those who are interested I have found a guide keyed to these tags at the following website.

Turn onto the access road to the Forestry Station and then immediately turn left onto a paved road. Parking is available a short distance down this road at the co-ordinates given as WP0001. Proceed on foot to a Trail Sign (see photo) at the co-ordinates shown as WP0002. From the trail sign carry on down a small hill onto the Forest Ecology Trail heading to the start of the loop at the co-ordinates given as WP0003 just across Barrier Creek. You should turn hard right at this point and hike the trail in a counter clockwise direction, especially if you are using the trail guide. The cache is located on a travelled part of the access to one of the viewpoints so please stay on the trails. I have provided a spoiler photo to avoid excessive searching.
If you haven’t found “Barrier Booty” by Judy-Wan Kenobi (GCH4NG) you should gather the information required to find that cache while you are here. Please do not post any photo’s of the nearby history plaque as the info needed to find her cache is on that plaque.
The Forest Ecology Trail cache is a 500 ml L&L that originally contained some good swag plus a $5.00 Starbucks gift card.
