Geocache Description:

The Dam Busters 3 is the last of a series of 3 and the end of a nice walk. It is a bit trickier tha the first two due to tree cover. It can be muddy if wet.(or the dam leaks!)

THE DAM BUSTERS 3 (3rd. Cache in a Series of 3) Wimbleball Reservoir is the largest Lake on Exmoor. The Dam is a concrete buttress construction completed in 1979. All 3 caches are on a lovely, gentle, 2 mile walk there, and 2 miles back ,alongside the WEST side of the Lake. TDB1 at the beginning TDB3. Cache at the end. You can walk all round the Lake if you feel fit, its about 8 miles. There is a Café and Loos, at the Visitor Centre, half way along, on the right, on the ridge road, above the Rowing Club Hut, marked by the Blue Spot on the map The dam impounds water from the River Haddeo to form a reservoir with a net storage of 21,320 megalitres, and a surface area of 150 hectares.Wimbleball supplies Exeter and parts of East Devon by releasing water into the River Exe. This water is subsequently abstracted at Tiverton and Exeter .Water is also supplied by pipeline to Wessex Water's Maundown Water Treatment Works. This arrangement was put in place at the time of construction. Wimbleball Lake, lies like a jewel, shimmering amidst rolling moorland and thickly wooded areas. It is to the south side of the moor, cradled in the shadow of Haddon Hill and is Exmoor's largest reservoir. Well stocked with rainbow trout, the lake is a major fishing attraction, it is also an ideal place for bird watching, with herons, kingfishers, buzzards and kestrels to be seen on the shores of the lake. Many other birds can be spotted in the dense woodland where way marked walks show many species of wildlife, including Deer, seen in the clearings beyond the woods. Rare flowers, herbs and plants survive in glades beneath the spreading, lofty treetops. It is a tranquil scene, enlivened by watersport enthusiats who flock here for windsurfing, sailing, rowing, and canoeing. 3rd. Cache in a Series of 3. Cache is in an Ammo Box with an awsome view of the dam towering above you. As there is a lot of tree cover your GPS will go bezzerk. Can become muddy if it rains(or the dam cracks) If you are coming from TDB2 walk over the Dam, enjoy the views, and turn right at the end, decend the hill, and cross the foot bridge. If you are Cache & Dashing you could park to the south of the lake, at the sharp bend on the Upton/Bury road. Hope you have a great day Caching. Do try another water side walk set by us sometime .. The Defence of the Realm 1, 2 & 3
