This cache is dedicated to adventurous wrinklies everywhere. My
in-laws, aged 75 and 80 years of age, got all the way to the summit
of Raven Crag via this route. I hope I am as fit when I reach my
senior years!
Free parking (2 hour limit) is available in the layby on the
opposite side of the A591 from where a path leaves the road to
Shoulthwaite Farm, before heading into the forest. From there on
the forest track winds up steadily, high above Shoulthwaite Gill,
and can be followed to a crossroads where paths lead off the Raven
Crag and Castle Crag. NOTE: if you intend following the main track
beyond this point in order to cross Shoulthwaite Gill and take the
path back down the valley on the far side of the gill, the path is
quite rough and involves crossing a tricky gorge at one point - not
an easy option. There is an easier path down alongside the forest
boundary fence from Castle Crag Hill Fort after an initial VERY
steep descent.
The cache, however, is only halfway up the main track, below the
impressive crags and screes of Sippling Crag. It's right by the
track, not up or down any dangerous slopes.
The cache is a lock'n'lock plastic box containing log book,
pencil and sharpener, and a few bits and bobs.
