One day, driving home from walking the dogs in nearby Lake Desire Park, I noticed a rather obscure sign along the road. Was it a trailhead perhaps? I didn't have time to stop and check then, but finally got a chance to come back today. Lo and behold! It was! So of course I had to go exploring in this 'new' found park (apparently officially called the Peterson Lake Park Natural Area).
Let me state now, up front, that this is NOT your regular city type of cache. In fact, that's why I was so delighted to find this park. The trail is overgrown, very muddy, with windfall to hop over, and berries and stinging nettles to maneuver around. There are bugs, branches, and flooding in parts. All in all? Just why I love hiking in the PNW! So be forewarned - you will get dirty!
Aside from the above disclaimer, the hike is about 1/2-3/4 mile from where I parked (a pull out at N 47 25.579, W 122 04.850). On a map, the cache looks deceptively close to GCW22Q (Thirsty at Spring Lake) but believe me when I say you do not want to come in from that direction (you would need to bushwack the entire way and cross the outlet of the lake which can't possibly be safe).
Instead, from the trailhead/parking, go east into the forest. Stay right at the first junction. At the powerlines, go down the hill towards the lake then back into the forest. You'll then cross a swampy/muddy area until you get back onto dry land. The cache is nearby. Because there are so many places to hide a cache here, I've included a spoiler photo. The cache itself is a decon container with a new geocoin just given to me by Guppyfish, and a geocaching.com magnet for the FTF.
Congratulations for sciuchetti for the FTF!
