Geocache Description:

This cache will take you right to the heart of a small country town.

Lancefield is often known as the geographical centre of Victora and these days is a great spot for a nice country lunch, winery tour or conference. There is an abundance of beautiful old buildings that go back to the mid 1800's, but the towns history goes back much further than that.

Just to the east of the township is Mt William. It was once the site of a quarry used by the Wurundjeri people to make axe heads which were traded to other tribes. These axe heads have been found as far and wide as South Australia and the NSW Riverina region

We can go further back than that though. Palaeontological finds have been made at Lancefield Swamp, on the south-western edge of town (adjacent to Lancefield Sports Ground). In an area of 2000 square metres, the skeletons of about 10 000 animals were found in a 20-cm thick bone bed. There is a strong predominance of extinct megafauna including Macropus titan (a kangaroo twice the size of today's largest relative), Diprotodon (a rhinoceros-sized wombat) and Genyornis (a giant flightless bird), the toothmarks of Thylacoleo carnifex (the marsupial 'lion') and 26 000-year-old human artefacts which, together with carbon-dated bones, indicate that people lived with Australia's megafauna for a period of some 7000 years.

So with all this information on the town why didn't we make it a multi? Well, these days, every day in Lancefield is a Lazy Day!

Feel free to use the hint as tree coverage may play havoc with the GPSr. You will be visible to others so stealth is required.
