Geocache Description:

This is a multi cache that starts from Semington, very close to the same starting spot for Disney Goes Hunting - GC10485, if you wish to do that one at the same time. There are several routes you could take but the most straight forward, and closest, would be to park at N51 21.076 W002 08.685. You will need to go through Semington Village and over the canal bridge- note this is now a no through road for cars. Should take less than 1 hour.

Pick up the start of the footpath at N51 21.140 W002 08.680 that takes you down the driveway next to Outmarsh Farm. Beware of the geese as they chased us when we set the cache. Head towards the above co-ordinates through the iron farm gate to a raised embankment that once held the Great Western Holt to Devizes railway track.

The Holt Junction to Devizes line opened on 1st July 1857 as a direct link without any intermediate stations. Gradually, in later years, various additional stops were added as villagers were encouraged to travel by the ‘new railway’. Semington Halt opened on 1st October 1906 and was built on an embankment to keep the railway track above the nearby River Avon flood level. Semington Halt platform was built using railway sleepers in 1906 when the small shelter was constructed. The platform structure was lower than standard height and this required the guard on the train to operate a lever to swing out a set of steps to enable passengers to climb aboard or to leave the train. This system sometimes caused a problem because if the guard forgot to retract the steps when the train reached a station with standard height platforms the steps would hit the platform and become damaged. All stations on the line were officially closed by railway reorganisation on the 19th April 1966 and tracks were soon lifted. However, part of the eastern bridge buttress at Semington can be seen when creeper covering is cleared away and the footpath leading up to where the platform was sited can just about be discerned, although mostly covered in a forest of weeds.

When you reach the above co-ordinates you will find a ten digit number - call these numbers ABCDEFGHIJ and solve the following:

N(F+J) E JI (B-G) (C+J) (H-J) W002 A (H+E) G F (D+J)

You will reach a section of the old railway track that is fenced off so you will then need to go via the footpath and over the style (near the pillbox) in order to reach the cache that is located a short distance the other side of the fence. It is in a medium plastic container big enough for small swaps and trackable items.
