Geocache Description:

Sheave Tower at Blair Mills
The cache is located near The Sheave Tower in Blair near Cambridge.
Ontario’s only remaining wooden water tower, used to power the nearby Blair Mill in 1876.

Barely visible through the trees along the Old Mill Road in Blair the Sheave Tower stands about 100 metres downstream from the site of a larger mill which was built by Samuel Bowman in 1846. It takes its name from the sheave wheel which is described as “a wheel with a grooved rim, especially one used as a pulley." A recent restoration put new timbers in its frame and a fresh coat of oxblood paint on its board and batten walls. The tower looks as it did when built 124 years ago. During the 1800s, creek water created power for the larger mill by churning through its turbine. The water then wastefully trickled downstream. So Bowman built the tower and installed a turbine to harness the water-power a second time before it flowed toward the Grand River. As water twisted the turbine under the tower, a series of gears and shafts spun a large steel wheel (sheave) near the peaked roof. Like a giant laundry line with a cable looped around two wheels, water power was transferred from the small tower to the main mill. It's one of the only surviving examples of auxiliary water power still standing.

Cache is a camoed lock n' lock container. Take the path across the bridge and turn right. There is a narrow path to follow to the cache site. Watch your step!
