Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The above co ordinance do not take you directly up to the
Earthcache, this is just a nice place to view it from. You will
need to park in the nearby lot and enter the building to climb the
stairs up. Being this is on private property there is a very small
fee to maintain the stairway to the top. It is $1.00 per
person.
Chimney Rock as it was known many years ago is now called Castle
Rock. Castle Rock is a popular stop for travelers headed into
northern Michigan.
Much of upper Michigan was first formed during the Archean Eon,
2500-4000 million years ago. Many changes have occurred over these
millions of years. Volcanoes erupted and exploded. Water covered
much of the land we see here today. Glaciers also helped to from
all of Michigan.
This formation is sedimentary rock which we know as limestone. The
limestone formation here is harder than much of the limestone of
the area and is the reason it still stands here today. Like many
rock formations this one continues to erode. The good news is it
has taken millions of year to erode to the point we see here today.
Much of the erosion came as a result of the residing glacier. Wind
and rain along with the freeze cycle of the area contribute to the
erosion today.
Many consider what you are seeing here today is crumbling rock. To
preserver the area from human erosion the formation area is fenced
off except for some areas along the staircase.
To log this Earthcache you will need to complete the
following.
1. You will need to e-mail me the elevation difference between
ground level and the top of the rock formation. Use your GPS to do
this, not the number listed on line or from the gift shop as they
are not what the GPS will give you!
2. Also in your e-mail describe in detail of the wall of this
formation as you walk to the top. Example would be color and size
of the fragments of the limestone that make up the formation.
3. This one is more for the fun of being here. Post a photo of your
self in front of the 2 large figures that you pass on your way out
of the fenced in area.
Open daily mid May to October only.
Visit http://www.stignace.com/attractions/castlerock/ for more
information.
Be sure to e-mail me within 7 days of logging the cache to
get credit for your work. If the rules of finding an Earthcache and
e-mailing the owner is not followed your log will be deleted
without notice!
