Geocache Description:

Take the easternmost Seep Lakes access road that turns S off Hwy 262. Hwy 262 is the road that crosses O'Sullivan Dam.

This cache is just beyond the most often used entrance leading into the Seep Lakes. A Discover Pass is required inside the area. The permit can be purchased at most places one would get a fishing license. Cachers can get to this cache without the parking pass by parking out in front of the Seep Lakes sign and then walking the small extra distance to the cache -- still not very far.

There is already an outstanding array of caches in the Seep Lakes area. This one is intended to get you revved up on your way in to find some of the others. The other caches offer some fun hikes and great views, good fishing and camping. Take a break and enjoy the wildlife and unique beauty of the lake-filled scabland.

The geologic appearance of this area is the result of a combination of ancient basalt lava flows followed much later by catastrophic ice age floods that surged repeatedly across the land from northwestern Montana. Before O'Sullivan Dam was built most of the lakes were dry potholes. The formation of Potholes Resevoir on the north side of the dam caused a rise in the area's water table, filling in many of the potholes with water, turning them into "seep lakes." A generic geological name for the entire area affected by the lava flows and floods is "channeled scablands."

The entire seep lakes area is an overlapping geographic puzzle of three entities:
1) the Drumheller Channels National Natural Landmark
2) the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and
3) the state managed Seep Lakes area

This cache is in #3 -- the Seep Lakes area. Get out and enjoy the entire area. Didn't see any but watch for snakes and ticks.

Have fun, you may become addicted to the area and want to keep coming back! Cache is a small black jar. BYO writing instrument.
