This loaded cache is hidden in a small overgrown jungle oasis on the East side of Pinellas.
When I first came to Florida over 7 years ago, this little jungle oasis served as a barrier between my serene backyard and the crazy bustle that is the Tampa Bay metropolis. Wild "air potato" vines ascended high into the many trees that spotted the little city-owned plot. At night, when the crickets hesitated, I could make out the occasional "thud" of a large "air potato" tuber clunk onto the sandy forest floor. Huge, glorious, Austrian pines lined the south end and thrust skywards, blocking the sound of traffic from Gulf to Bay Blvd.
Then, one day, when I was out of town, the city came in and flattened the entire plot. Upon my return, my ears were instantly alarmed by the "rushing" sound of speeding vehicles and the occasional "whizz" of an impact wrench at the nearby tire shop. These sounds were alien to me, for the great wispy pines blocked all but the faintest murmurs of that almost invisible city world.
Over the next few years, the jungle has begun to regenerate itself. Small spears of Austrian pine protrude from the earth, as if encouraged by the memory of their ancestors. "Air potato" vines have almost completely blanketed the once bare sandy lot. Life has slowly begun to return here, as it always does when undisturbed by man. Perhaps one day, it will be as beautiful as I remember it once was.
I hid this cache here to commemorate the memory of this beautiful little world, destroyed for reasons beyond my understanding.
In it's brief barren state, it served as a dumping zone for a handful of unscrupulous individuals, so it is a prime CITO candidate. I have included a few recycled WalMart bags for anyone who wishes to help restore this jungle oasis.
Parking coordinates are N 27 57.689' W 082 43.195'. We have included a logbook, 2 pens, 2 travel bugs, several pieces of jewelry, a Hooter's shot glass, gourmet coffee, a message bag, several animal grow capsules, a few toy airplanes, and some other miscellaneous items I may have forgotten.
Enjoy!
Updated 2/17/2008: Well, the bulldozers came back and cleared the lot again. Apparently it was getting too overgrown. I still don't know what they plan to do with it yet. In any case, the cache is still in-tact and still packed full of goodies! To my knowledge, the homeless lady has moved out, but she is pretty much harmless. Thanks for all the support!
