Rock Island State Park: Two ferry rides to get there, unless you
have a larger watercraft of your own to get there.
Welcome to the Third
(and Final?) Rock Island Getaway.

Dan "Really, I'm Not
Lost" Smith visits the Potawatomi Lighthouse lantern room. It's
free!
I will try to keep this description short, as you can get all
the information you need about the event and camping on Rock Island
by reading the archived descriptions of Rock Island Getaway
I [HERE] and Rock Island Getaway II
[HERE.]
Format will be mostly the same, with the following
changes/improvements:
- There will be some relatively easy temporary caches
along the Door peninsula on your way to Washington Island, to get
you in the mood. No "gotcha" caches, nothing over a 2/2.
- I am planning to visit to Rock Island before the event
to hide temps. This might be a day trip, perhaps an overnighter,
depending on the transportation options. This means I don't need to
ask attendees to hide temps, but anyone willing to hide temps for
the event is welcome to add to the list. There is a new permament
cache on the island. If you want to know numbers, I would guess
20-25 finds for the weekend. No "look-under-the-picnic-table"
caches, but legitimate finds.
- There is supposed to be a meteor shower that weekend,
and, with clear skies, there will be no better place to observe
them.
- Anyone interested in visiting an allegedly haunted
cemetery can participate in a sunset/early nighttime vigil. I am
still trying to sort out information as to which of the three
cemeteries has purported paranormal activity.
- Group Site I is reserved. This is the larger of the
two group sites, and closer to the dock than last year's Group Site
II. There is no charge for the event, but persons staying at the
group site will be asked to contribute to the costs of the
campsite. You are also welcome to stay at an individual site, if
you wish, and visit us at the group site. The group site is wooded
and fairly large, so people can spread out while still staying
together. I will probably have a coffee can available to collect
donations to help defray expenses, but I'm not going to hound
anybody for donations. Bring some extra cash for firewood.
- Dogs and children are welcome at the group site, as
far as I know.
- The beer tasting last year was a popular event, and
will be repeated. However, we need more cheese and crackers to
"cleanse the pallet," So if you are going to partake in our tasting
event, I encourage you to also bring some cheese/sausage/crackers,
but this is not mandatory.
- "Watch" this event for updates. Although I do often
email people directly, event-related information is best posted
here.
- Kayaks welcome. No canoes.
Email me with any questions, or ask them
here.
