An easy find a short drive off the Calder Highway
Welcome to the first cache by Team Ladava
Little is known of the Tu Vien Phat Quaing Gardens where work started in 1998 however a couple of local newspapers have attempted some investigative reporting and it is generally thought to be a Vietnamese Monastery.
It is also thought that some ‘at risk’ youths are brought out of their normal city environment to assist with the work.
Take some time to admire FROM OUTSIDE THE GATES the plaques in the walls and within the gardens the amazing range of sculptures which are believed to be imported from Vietnam. A massive dragon peers from a pond and huge black warriors stand guard near the temple toward the rear of the gardens. Many works of art depict the Vietnamese migrants journeying across the waters to their new home including a mother holding the hands of her two children while looking across a lake to a map of Australia.
Approach by leaving the Calder freeway either opposite the Calder Park Thunderdome at The Organ Pipes exit and via Thompson Rd. or at Diggers Rest on the Bulla - Diggers Rest Rd. and via Duncans Lane
Enjoy.
Finders, Spottyteapot has been able to add some additional information re. the feature at this location -
'The owner of the feature had two Temples. This and another smaller one at Footscray West.
She abandoned this one as there were few volunteers to help build it and not enough visitors to raise sufficient donations to continue construction. Unfortunately it is closed to public access due to the danger of vandalism.
Our thanks to Spottteapot for adding to our story.
