Originally planned to be located near Toodyay, the European Space
Agency's Deep Space Antenna wasn't wanted by that community and
instead was placed here, about 10km from Australia's only monastery
town, New Norcia.
There are other links: the Benedictine monastery was established
by Spanish monks and the sister telescope in the ESA network is in
Spain, near Madrid.
Plus, of course, both facilities spend their time thinking about
the heavens.
The location of this cache is less special than we were hoping
for, but you can see the dish over the hills from this area and
that's the main thing we wanted to achieve!
Otherwise, you'd probably never notice that you were driving past a
35m radio telescope that's helping to unravel the mysteries of the
universe!
