Historic Downtown Lethbridge

I'm old enough to remember when downtown Lethbridge swarmed with people and I hope to see it happen again. I'd like to introduce you to one of the founding fathers of the area, J. D. Higinbotham. In fact, many people have referred to him as "Mr Downtown". But first, here's our little exercise.

Since I've been a history buff for a long time, I've read a lot of historical plaques. Searching for this site will take you to one of my favorites.

Once you find the plaque you have to find the mistake. The monument commemorates the landing of the first airplane flight across the Canadian Rockies. Read the plaque carefully and if you know your geography you'll be able to find the word that is incorrect.

What is even stranger the federal government never caught their mistake. The plaque was placed here in 1966. Almost 10 years later the government had a ceremony in Vancouver commemorating the starting point of the same historic flight. Yes, they unveiled a plaque — same plaque — same mistake.

So in 10 years they never caught their mistake. You can do better.

TO LOG THE CACHE

Go to the posted coordinates and read the monument. Look at a map of western Canada and trace Captain Hoy's flight across the Rockies based on what you read on the plaque.

When you have figured out the word that's wrong and what the correct word should be go to the following waypoint:

This is the Downtown Lethbridge Main Street Project Office. Enter (during office hours — 8.30 to 4.30 - Monday to Friday) and tell the friendly staff what word is incorrect and what the word should be. They will have you sign the log book and you can pick up your prize — a book “Ten Years of Trek”. As a teacher in the 1970s my students and I researched, retraced and documented landmarks followed by early explorers across the west. If you like history you’ll find lots of places to explore in this book. Have fun.
