INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #559

"Gosport Cemetery"

This quest will take you to northeast Owen County. Anyone heading toward McCormick's Creek State Park from the north will drive right by the Gosport Cemetery as you head down SR 67. This is a large cemtery and includes graves for many US veterans. It also contains much interesting headstone artwork. It would be quite easy to spend a large portion of a day here for those with an interest in old cemeteries.

Mexican-American War and Civil War Veteran

Fielding Marsh served in both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Company B of the 4th Indiana Volunteers were organized in Gosport in May of 1847 and went on to fight in Mexico. He nearly missed the Civil War as the 148th was not mustered until the last 2 months of the war and served on garrison duty in Nashville Tennessee.

The Soldier and the Doctor

There has to be a story behind this headstone, but research has not turned up anything on Dr. Menges. Giving her date of birth, if she was a medical doctor in the 19th century then she would certainly be a pioneer. As for Tilghman Brown, he has a nearby military headstone indicating he served with the Indiana 1st Heavy Artillery during the Civil War as a sergeant.

Tree Stump Stones

The tree-stump headstones are interesting and you usually see one or two in a lot of the older cemeteries. However, this is the first time I have seen a double tree-stump stone. It appears to be intended for a husband and wife but only one inscription was ever added. Many tree stump stones mark the graves of members of a fraternal organization called Woodmen of the Woods. A tree-stump with ivy vines is also listed to represent head of household and immortality. This particular headstone does not have the WOW engraving usually seen on a Woodmen of the Woods grave. .
