The Cache Across America Series: This is a series of caches that will take you on a caching tour of the entire United States. One cache is hidden in each of the 50 states. These caches each contain a numeric clue that will lead you to one final cache located in our nation's capitol upon completion of the series.

About this cache: Montana's Cache Across America geocache is hidden near the state capital of Helena and on national forest land along the Missouri River, Lewis & Clark's route through this part of the state. This stretch of the river is extremely popular for fishing so bring your pole if you have the extra time. The mostly level walk is a little over two-thirds of a mile each way, and starts at Hauser Dam. In keeping with usual Montanan caching procedures, a portion of the drive in is over (well-maintained) dirt roads. Note that the parking area is narrow; recreational vehicles and trailers are not allowed past Black Sandy State Park, approximately 1.5 miles from the parking at the dam.
The cache container is hidden above the trail at 3750', both to allow for better views of the canyon and to hopefully avoid accidental discovery. The climb from the trail requires a little less than 100' of elevation gain. When you start getting close to the coordinates pick your best route; there's no need to scramble straight up the slope. Doing so will only lead to increased erosion. The climb should not be too difficult for most folks; just take your time and watch your footing. Accuracy may be an issue due to the canyon walls and rocky terrain, so the hint has a detailed description of the cache's hiding place. Don't be afraid to use it. When re-hiding the cache, please cover it completely and carefully so it does not attract unwanted attention.
Note that on occasion Hauser Dam may be closed to the public due to Homeland Security concerns. I've provided a waypoint route to an alternative parking area at the other end of the trail. This is a day-use-only area below Hauser Dam; the road is primitive for the last 3 miles so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Street cars can make it, but the going will be a bit slower.
