Geocache Description:

Eighteen Mile Creek is one of the largest tributaries to Lake Erie. It passes through the Towns of Evans, Hamburg and Eden and provides a great place for fishing, hiking and fossil hunting.

The path of Eighteen Mile Creek was carved out by a glacier approximately 100,000 to 750,000 years ago. When the glacier passed through, it created a visible cross section of the past rock formations within the steep banks of the creek. As a result, shale and limestone beds dating as far back as the Devonian period, approximately 385,000,000 year ago, can be seen. Included in those rock beds are the Ludlowville, Moscow and Hamilton formations of shale and Tichenor Limestone. Among the first to document this marvel was Amadeus Grabau in the late 1890’s. All of the geology, ecology and paleontology in Eighteen Mile Creek is amazing. However, for this Earthcache, the focus will be on the Tichenor Limestone.

Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediment and calcite (CaCO3) are deposited in an area and solidified via lithification, which can take thousands of years. Calcite can come from various sources including the broken and eroded shell and bones of tiny sea creatures. Limestone often has a white or grayish color, other colors may be in it due to the presence of impurities, and is somewhat rough or chalky in texture. Limestone is also frequently used in the construction of buildings. The nearby Graycliff Estate designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is constructed with Tichenor Limestone. (visit link)

In order to log this Earthcache, you must do the following:
1. HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE!! This cache should be avoided after heavy precipitation as the water levels can rise quickly. Also remember to cache with a friend.
2. Define what talus is. (It’ll help you locate which band of stone is the Tichenor.) You DO NOT need to post this.
3. Take and post a picture at or near the posted coordinates where there is Tichenor over Talus. Pictures with participants in them are encouraged, but not mandatory.
4. Get either a measurement or estimation of how thick the Tichenor is and e-mail it to me.
