Geocache Description:

Maine's oldest cache located in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth.

cache container is an ammo box.!

This is the first GeoCache in the state of Maine! It was featured on the back of the Maine 2005 geocoin. A 2011 geocoin commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the first cache in Maine.

Fort Williams Park is on the rocky coast of Maine in Cape Elizabeth. Also on the property is the Portland Headlight, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The park is open from dawn until dusk daily. Be aware that the park has many uses and there are some days when a visit might be difficult including Family Fun Day (June), the running of the Beach to Beacon road race (August), and the Labor Day Art Festival.

The cache container is a metal olive drab military ammo box. After 10 years, it was a bit rusty, but well loved. That ammo can went missing and was replaced with a more recent sibling.

After finding the cache be sure to visit the Lighthouse Gift Shop (in the garage) and the Lighthouse Museum (in the lighthouse building) and check out the great views of Portland Harbor! The park is also a favorite kite flying site.

Note: travel bugs have a habit of going missing from this cache. Better to dip than to leave them, it seems.
