Geocache Description:

The Bass is a Motte and bailey site for a castle built around 800 years ago. Rumour has it that Robert the Bruce spent time here recovering from injuries. The cache itself is at ground level, but a hike up 'The Bass' is a must! It is part of the 'old' graveyard in Inverurie.

Take the Keithhall Road from Inverurie and go under the railway bridge. Parking is sharp left just after the bridge, and keep going round following the wall until you find a small parking area beside the river. Failing that park beside the main gate to the cemetery, but not obstructing it.

There are Pictish stones beside the trees in the cemetery . They date to around 1500 years ago. There are information plaques in the cemetery which give detailed information about the Pictish Stones and The Bass.

The graveyard itself is worth a stroll around. There is an old part and a newer part. A small section of the new area has an unusual concentric layout.

In the older part there is apparently the grave of a woman called Mary Elphinstone or 'Mary Eerie Orie Elphinstone' as she is known locally. Story goes that when she died after childbirth, her husband, the local minister, was so distressed that he remained at her graveside, which was just as well, because he heard her shouting for help from down below....! Mary was dug up and lived many years after.... She was eventually buried in the same grave!! We searched but couldn't find her grave, which is reportedly still there. Can you find it? It is meant to be behind the main gate in the old part.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE BUSINESS CARDS IN CACHES.,P. Here's a view from the top of 'The Bass'......you can just see Bennachie!
