Nice little waterfront park. Area steeped in history. No hiking
required.
Bell Ewart began as a steamboat landing and railway station after
the railroad reached nearby Allandale in 1853. A spur line was
built from Lefroy, and the village named after landowner Jas Bell
Ewart, grew rapidly, it was for a time, the main shipping centre on
Lake Simcoe. A large sawmill was built employing 200 men and all
prospered during the lumbering era. In late 1860's after fall of
lumbering, ice industry flourished (blocks of ice cut from the
frozen lake) until 1942 when electrical refrigeration brought it to
an end. The Fletcher Clan (Geocachers) reported in their log some
additional history. "An interesting thing I'd like to add to the
description. While digging the foundation for a house close by that
I was working on, the contractor unearthed evidence of said ice
industry. There was a layer of wood over the whole spot and some
small rail tracks that formed a mini rail system to bring the ice
in from the lake and transport it. So amazingly enough, there is
still stuff buried around the area as proof." The Steamer "Emily
May" was launched from here 1861 and was the largest to sail Lake
Simcoe at 144ft length. Railroads brought here demise in 1883.
Bring your own writing intstrument, only a log-book is in the
cache. Much stealth required while mini muggles play around in
Summer and vacationers enjoy the beach area.
