Marstein fyr ligger på en holme ytterst mot storhavet i innløpet til Korsfjorden. Området er meget værhardt og det må derfor være godt vær for å kunne ta seg i land på øyen. Selv når det er stille vær vil det alltid være litt drag i sjøen slik at det er vanskelig å legge til mot kaien på østsiden av øyen. Ved kaien er det trapper med bildekk nederst, slik at det er mulig å ta seg i land når forholdene er gode. Tidligere var det plassert ut en bøye like utenfor kaien, men denne er nå tatt vekk.
Marstein fyr ble automatisert i 1987 og siden 2002 har det vært ubemannet. Fyret ble kjøpt av Austevoll kommune i 2005. Mer informasjon om Marstein fyr finnes på WikipediA.

The Marstein Lighthouse is located on a small island in the mouth of the Korsfjord, where the fjord meets the North Sea. The weather in this area is unusually harsh. In order to dock on the island, the weather must be calm. Even in calm weather, the sea currents are strong, making it difficult to dock at the quay on the east side of the island.
The Marstein Lighthouse was automated in 1987. It has been unmanned since 2002. The Municipality of Austevoll purchased the lighthouse in 2005. More information about the lighthouse is available on WikipediA.
Before you make plans to visit the island in search of the cache, you should check the weather conditions in the area. The Forecasting Division for Western Norway (Værvarslinga) (tel.: +47 55 23 66 00) can answer your questions about wind, temperature, and wave height at the Troll Field, which lies about 90 km northwest of Marstein.
The coastal pilots at the Viksøy Pilot Station (tel.: +47 97 16 16 15) can provide information about the conditions around Marstein. This station is manned 24 hours a day and the staff can provide information about wave height and weather/wind conditions.
