100th Anniversary Cache: Brule River State Forest

The Brule River State Forest is 43,000 acres of diversified forest land. Frederick Weyerhaeuser donated the 1st land for the State forest in 1907. It is the only forest in WI that encompasses both the source and mouth of a river. The Brule River begins at Lake St. Croix (the continental divide of the Mississippi and Great Lakes) at the south end of the Forest, flowing north to Lake Superior. The river is a world famous trout stream and has been fished by several US Presidents.

The Brule River State Forest practices multiple use management, forest recreation and Wildlife Watershed management.

The Brule River Forest has a variety of recreational opportunities. There are two campgrounds, picnic areas, trails for hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. There are natural areas, a fish hatchery and the lamphrey barrier to visit. The North Country National Scenic Trail traverses through the state forest with several trail access points.

Take a hike on the Stoney Hill trail through the Norway and White Pine Plantation to the 100th Anniversary cache. The plantation is one of the oldest in the state, planted in 1916 and thinned several times. The thinning in some cases utilized horse logging. If you think the hike is tiring, imagine caring water and watering all those young trees by hand!

Geologically, Stoney Hill was an island in a glacial river. At the top of Stoney Hill, there is a nice westerly overlook and a couple benches to sit and rest. Also the remnants of a fire tower is there. If you listen carefully you can hear the Brule River.

Parking is available near the DNR Brule State Forest Headquarters. The trail can be accessed across from the DNR Bois Brule Campground.

Cache has some small swag items to trade and a geocoin. Please sign the log book!

The Geocache Notification form has been submitted to the land manager of the Brule River State Forest Department of Natural Resources Headquarters of the Wisconsin DNR.
