This area of the Big Island is rich in history of sugar cane production. Volunteer cane is still present at this cache site, where cane was grown and cut, sluiced down to the now rusted-out refineries at the waterfront, and the resulting produce was moved on for commercial use. I've read some fascinating stories by local authors on both the occupation of field worker and the family life in the camps.
This plastic container is about 4-5 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, and is located at a roadside pullover outside of Honomu, which is worth a stop, especially on a hot day for ice cream. And, not to be missed are two huge banyan trees, and I mean HUGE, in town across from the Honomu Hongwanji Temple. Have fun!
