Geocache Description:

A quick cache break just off the N11 north of Wexford town.

This cache is part of a series of caches throughout Ireland. Known as the "Pit-stop" series, these caches should provide a quick break from your journey and an opportunity to log a quick cache.

This cache is located beside Ferrycarrig Castle. There is a car park and pleasant seating area beside the castle, so pull off the road, find the cache and rest your feet for a while!

Before 1795 there was no bridge over the Slaney between Enniscorthy, 14 miles upriver, and the sea. Ferry boats gave service across the river at Ferrybank, near Wexford town, and here at Ferrycarrig. Ferrycarrig was an important crossing point, being the last narrowing point of the river above Wexford, and required protection and defense. The present castle was built in the 13th century to protect the ferry, which was guarded on the opposite bank by the old castle of Carrick.

If you feel like some food and haven't brought a picnic, a couple of hundred metres up the N11 is the fancy Ferrycarrig Hotel which also provides food. Just south of the bridge is the Irish National Heritage centre. This "theme park" attempts to provide an image of Ireland through the ages. Within the park lies the round tower you will no doubt have noticed. However this tower is not as ancient as it appears and was constructed as a memorial to the Crimean War.

This cache is a small tupperware box. You will not need to approach any steep drops to find it.
