Old Kellogg Marsh School Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

FluteFace: Sadly, they are tearing down the old school. I had hoped that it might be saved somehow, but that was not to be. This cache is about the location with the school. No school - no cache. [:(] I'll miss it.

Geocache Description:

I've lived in this area for more than 20 years. I'd always though that this old school was the original Kellogg Marsh School, so I decided to find out more about it. It turns out that I was only partly right.

The history I turned up (from Reflections of Marysville: A Pictorial History -- A Centennial Look At The Past by Maude Barrett and Pat Olsen) is a bit muddy as to dates, but what follows shouldn't be too far off.

This school was the Pleasant Hill School, the first school in the Kellogg Marsh area. "Officially" built in 1912, it actually was staffed by two teachers and opened its doors to students in 1897. It was a great example of a rural school and featured a heavy cast iron bell in its belfry

The school closed its doors to students in the mid-1950s when nearby Cascade Elementary was opened. The belfry's bell went with its students and lived at the new school for the next 30+ years. Since its closing as a school, the building has been used as a body shop, but has been boarded up since I've been here. It is little by little falling apart and (sadly) could now be considered an unsafe structure.

In 1989, the Kellogg Marsh area finally regained its school -- Kellogg Marsh Elementary School. The old bell was also moved to the new school, and now stands in a place of honor in front. It has been dedicated to the memory of Lucile E. "Ma" Wilson, a teacher in Marysville for 42 years, and the memory of Kellogg Marsh School.

So which name is right? I don't know, but I prefer "Old Kellogg Marsh School." That's what it's called by the locals now and it works for me.

About this cache:
 • It would be wise to stay away from the building. The cache is not there.
 • It is rumored that there is a small nest of stinging instects nearby. Proceed at your own risk.
 • Bring a writing tool.
 • When you find the cache, please remove it carefully, note how it was hidden, and rehide it the same way.
 • There is an FTF prize, an unactivated Hawaiian Hibiscus micro geocoin.
 • Congratulations to teperky on her FTF. She won bragging rights and a set of TB tags.

Finally, please let me know if there are problems with either the cache or coordinates. Most importantly, have fun!
