Geocache Description:

This location offers excellent views in both directions along the Ochil Hills. The cache is a small plastic box.

This cache can be approached from several directions. We decided to start from the car park opposite Devonvale Hall, Tillicoultry. The hall was built by Samuel Jones of Devonvale Ltd, a paper coating firm who were one of the main employers in the town, the opening ceremony took place on 11th May 1940). You will walk along a path, which from 3rd June 1851 until finally closing 15th June 1964, was the railway line. Four or five trains ran daily giving locals access by rail to Dollar, Perth, Alloa and Stirling and all the stations in between. If you head east past the hall along the gravel track you will arrive at a fork in the path. This was where the railway line split, the track on the left carrying on to Dollar while the other headed off to the Devon Colliery. Head off up the path to the right and you will arrive at an old bridge, carry on over and follow what is left of the tarmac road until you reach the top. This area is now very overgrown but hidden in the trees is the entrance to the mine shaft, now safely bricked up. At one time there were more than 300 mine shafts in the Wee County, and more than one third of Scotland's coal exports were shipped from Alloa. At the right of the entrance to the mine there is a path that leads you up a flight of steps. Once you've climbed to the top give yourself a pat on the back and start to head towards the house at the top of the hill. After reaching the house, walk along the path beside it. The cache is located in the field, across the style at the end of the path. The path at the side of the house is now very overgrown, however it is still passible with either a machete or a pair of trousers you no longer care about!
