History (Short Version)

Barthlmä Khevenhüller (1539-1613) discovered the lake as scenery of manorial representation and titled selfportrayal.
The Schloss Velden was built between 1590 and 1603, the social center of Khevenhüller’s time, and
meant to serve as an old-age residence. In 1762, a fire ruined major parts of the building that consisted of a 3-
level Renaissance building with four polygonal corner towers and extensive farm buildings. Views of the castle
in the late 18th/19th century show the state of preservation, after Ernst Wahliß, a industrialist from Vienna,
purchased the castle in 1890 and reconstructed the castle in means of a neo renaissance design and partly
renovated it according to old plans. The reconstruction was designed by Wilhelm Heß, an architect from Vienna.
Numerous renovations and additional buildings, planned by the architect Franz Baumgartner who is considered
the representative of the so-called Lake Wörthersee architecture, followed in the 1920s and 30s and shaped the
view of the village in a very unique way.

GESCHICHTE Schlosshotel Velden

Der See als Kulisse herrschaftlicher Repräsentation und adeliger Selbstdarstellung wurde
durch Barthlmä Khevenhüller (1539-1613) entdeckt. Er ließ zwischen 1590 und 1603 das
Schloss Velden, das zum gesellschaftlichen Mittelpunkt seiner Zeit wurde, als Alterssitz
errichteten. 1762 vernichtete ein Brand große Teile des ursprünglich dreigeschossigen
Renaissancebaues mit vier polygonalen Ecktürmen und ausgedehnten Wirtschaftsgebäuden.
Ansichten des späten 18./19. Jahrhundertszeigen den Erhaltungszustand des Schlosses, das
nach dem Kauf durch den Wiener Industriellen Ernst Wahliß 1890 zu einem Schlosshotel im
Stile der Neorenaissance umgebaut bzw. zum Teil nach alten Planen wiederhergestellt wurde.
Geplant wurde dieser Umbau von dem Wiener Architekten Wilhelm Heß. Zahlreiche weitere
Um- und Zubauten folgten in den 20er und 30er Jahren nach Planen des Architekten Franz
Baumgartner, dessen Bauten das Ortsbild von Velden im besonderen prägen und der als der
Repräsentant der sog. Wörtherseearchitektur anzusehen ist.
