Geocache Description:

A short walk to a secluded bay on the Nave Nortrail

This is a replacement for the original May Craig Bay cache which was unfortunately muggled.

May Craig is a rocky outcrop in the sea close to a small bay just north of the fishing village of Old Portlethen. Old Portlethen is situated a couple of miles east of the rest of Portlethen, an expanding sprawling commuter town on the A90 some five miles south of Aberdeen. In contrast to the modern Portlethen, Old Portlethen is a former small fishing community which hugs the cliffs between Findon and Downies.

Like many other east coast villages it is situated close to a natural harbour where you will often see small boats tied up or hauled on to the foreshore.

Portlethen sits on the Nave Nortrail, a network of footpaths in the countries bounding the North Sea. (visit link)

To the south of the harbour lie a number of boulders now known as Craigmaroinn after the rocks that lie just off shore. These have developed into a local centre for bouldering, with nearly 100 established “problems”. The boulders offer excellent views north and south along the coast, often remaining in sunlight until late afternoon. The local rock is Micra Schist ranging from the sharp and jaggy type seen elsewhere on the cliffs south of Aberdeen to a smoother washed version more recently seen inland.

The cache is situated a short walk north from Old Portlethen harbour in a bay directly overlooking May Craig. Limited road-side parking is available in the village. From the harbour it is possible to walk round the cliffs to the cache site then beyond towards Findon on the Nave Nortrail. The path offers excellent views north and south along the coast. An alternative approach is along a farm track which accesses the bay directly (Reference point 1), but parking is extremely limited in this area (alternatively this track can be used to create a round trip by using the road back into the village).

The original cache was placed on the edge of the old ruined building which contains winding equipment presumably to haul boats on to the beach.

When placed the cache contained the Joe Bloggs TB, a fluorescent highlighter, a whistle, marbles, a metal puzzle, a measuring tape, a badge, a rubber ball, a letter puzzle and a "girl thing" tag
