Raynes Farm is a cooperative conservation improvement project involving many people and organizations.
Raynes Farm, as you stand by the cache site, to your left, includes the upland fields and the wetlands in front of you and off to the right where I-295 cuts through it. This left three distinct and seperate areas connected only by culverts. The first and largest section is on the west side of I-295 directly in front of you. The second largest section is to the east of I-295. The smallest and most unique section is the area between the north and southbound lanes of the highway. There is also a ten acre farm pond out behind the house and barn that drains into the wetland. Beaver and many other non waterfoul species abound there.
The agencies and individuals involved in the restoration of this wetland are listed on the site sign. First they replaced the old dam with a concrete structure that would allow the management of the water levels within the wetland. Then four seperate lengths of 32" high barrier fence, totaling over a mile, was erected on each side of the north and southbound lanes to keep adult and immature ducks as well as many of the other indigenous animals off the roadway. Finially, volunteers from Ducks Unlimited and other conservation minded people built and placed Wood Duck boxes for breeding pairs. Most other duck species nest in the reeds and deep grasses.
