Geocache Description:

This is another cache that will take you to a mining memorial in North Staffordshire.

At the top of Apedale country park is an elevated pit wheel that was put in place to commemorate those of all ages who dedicated their lives to coal mining in Staffordshire. The wheel is 750 feet above sea level and can be can from a good distance away. The wheel, which is 19 feet in diameter was transported by the Territorial Army from Annesley Colliery in Nottinghamshire, The wheel - bought for just £100 - has now been placed on a specially-constructed stand above the Apedale Heritage Centre, which portrays miners' lives above and below ground.

There were a large number of mines and footrails in the area and a number of deaths occurred at Burley pit that was close by.
The park was created after the area was open cast mined and is now maturing rather well. The cache is a small container situated a short distance from the wheel. Parking is available off Black Bank Road, please check the time the gates are locked. If time is short you should be able to park next to the entrance.
Below the wheel in the valley is Apedale Heritage centre that offers underground visits, has a cafe and a mining museum, (visit link)
