This cache has been archived.

Postie: Seems this cache has gone missing so I will archive it to allow another cache to be placed in the area. It has been some time since Greenmantles significant birthday anyway!

Geocache Description:

This cache was placed on Greenmantle’s ‘significant’ birthday. 24.04.07 (I won’t say which one but he may use his new bus pass to get to this cache!)

The cache is set on the banks of the river Tees at Croft. Access to the river bank is via the stone flagged footpath through the graveyard, round the far side of St Peter's Church, Croft. Please keep to the path and don’t take short cuts across the graveyard. There are various spots near by for parking.

Lewis Carroll’s father was rector of Croft Church from 1843-1868 and Lewis Carroll lived in the rectory from the age of 11. It is thought that much of Alice in Wonderland was set in and around the rectory.

There is a great view of the 7 arches of the County Bridge from the footpath. The bridge links the counties of Durham on the far bank and Yorkshire. During the flood of February 1995, the water level was higher than the top of the arches. At one time the constituencies of the Prime Minister (Tony Blair) and the leader of the opposition (William Haig) met at this bridge.

On the opposite bank you can see the Post Office where Greenmantle lived as a lad for 20 years. His dad was the postmaster.

To get past the locked gate you have to walk on for about 10 meters to the end of the fence and then back along the other side of the fence. The gate is a relic from the days when the river flooded and the sluice below was used. The river bank was re-sculptured some years ago and the sluice is no longer a hazard.
