PT - Mosteiro de Leça do
Balio
O objectivo desta cache é dar a conhecer este monumento e a sua
zona envolvente, ideal para um passeio em familia.
Classificado como monumento nacional, este imóvel medieval é
considerado um dos melhores exemplares arquitectónicos existentes
no país, de transição do estilo românico para o gótico. Com origem
anterior ao séc. X, foi posteriormente (séc. XII) a primeira casa
mãe dos Cavaleiros Hospitalários da Ordem de Malta em Portugal. Da
construção românica resta apenas, nas traseiras da igreja, uma ala
incompleta do claustro, um portal e uma janela com decoração
vegetalista. Foi reedificado no séc. XIV, segundo o modelo das
igrejas fortaleza. A fachada principal de estilo gótico, com ampla
rosácea radiada e rematada por uma cruz da Ordem de Malta, possui
torre de menagem de traça românica, coroada de ameias. No interior,
dividido em três naves, podemos admirar a capela-mor com abóbada de
nervuras, a capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário ou do Ferro e os
túmulos de vários cavaleiros e frades, destacando-se a arca tumular
de Frei João Coelho, Grão-Mestre da Ordem, com estátua jacente da
autoria de Diogo Pires, o Moço, bem como a pia baptismal, cuja base
é decorada por animais exóticos. No exterior, o Cruzeiro é também
da autoria do mesmo mestre coimbrão. Foi neste Mosteiro que o rei
D. Fernando casou com D. Leonor de Teles.
Junto ao Mosteiro existe um parque que foi requalificado e
encontra-se aberto das 10h às 00h. Nesse parque falta apenas a
requalificação do rio Leça que ali passa. Podemos encontrar um
anfiteatro, onde se realizam alguns espectáculos durante o verão,
uma esplanada e um parque infantil. O horário de funcionamento do
parque é das 10h às 24h.

Monastery
The objective of this cache is to introduce you to a fine
monument and its lovely setting, which are ideal for a family fun
drive.
Being classified as national monument, this medieval building is
considered to be one of Portugal’s best architectural
examples of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture.
The original structure dates to before the 10th century, having
subsequently become the first Chapter House of the Knights
Hospitaller of the Order of Malta in Portugal (during the 12th
century). Of the original Romanesque features only an incomplete
section of the cloister, a portal, and a window ornamented with
floral motifs are left, at the back of the church. The structure
was rebuilt during the 14th century following a fortress church
model. The main Gothic façade features a large radial rosette and
is capped with a typical cross of the Order of Malta, and boasts a
keep of Romanesque design crowned with merlons and crenels. The
interior is divided in three naves. One can admire the
church’s main chapel, which features a ribbed dome, together
with the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, or of the Iron, together
with the tombs of various knights and monks. Of these the
sarcophagus of former Grand Master Brother João Coelho, featuring a
lying statue by Diogo Pires the Young, as well as the baptism
basin, ornamented with carvings of exotic animals at its base,
deserve particular highlight. Outside, the Cruzeiro stone cross
shrine was cut by the same master sculptor from Coimbra. Portuguese
King Ferdinand I married Leonor de Teles at this Monastery.
Adjoining the Monastery, there is a park which has been renovated
and is open from 10:00 AM to 12: 00 PM. The upgrading of the banks
of the Leça River, which crosses the park, is the only feature of
the renovation project still to be completed. The park features an
amphitheater hosting a few events during summer, and an open-air
café and children’s playground. Opening hours are 10:00 AM to
12: 00 PM.

perto. O total da cache não o fará andar muito a pé. Dê uma volta
pelo mosteiro e disfrute da sua arquitectura. Procure então a placa
comemorativa dos 1000 anos do mosteiro.
Começamos então a construir o puzzle:

The coordinates will take you to the façade of the monastery. Find
parking nearby. You won’t have to walk around a lot to hunt
the entire cache. So walk around the monastery, and enjoy the
architecture and history of the place. Then search for the
monastery’s 1,000th anniversary commemorative plate.
Let’s start sorting out the puzzle then:
