Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Pawling Nature Preserve in Pawling, New York. There are several trailheads, but the main parking is located on Quaker Lake Rd. at N41*36.439 W073*33.494 that can accommodate several vehicles. This is the Yellow trailhead. This road is mostly dirt and can be very rough, so keep this in mind especially when there has been precipitation. The Preserve is open from sunrise to sunset.

Because of the lack of trail maps at the kiosk at times, I've downloaded an old one I had and color coded it. Click on the "Trail Map" icon below and print it out to make sure you have one as there are several miles of trails here to discover. The numbers on the map are distances from intersections as taken from the large trail map at the kiosk.

This cache is a four stage multi and will require a few hours and around 3-4 miles of hiking to complete, so plan accordingly. There are other caches to be had along the way in this preserve, so the hike doesn’t seem as long as it might. The trails for the Preserve are very well marked and trail maps can be had at the kiosk at the Yellow trailhead from the parking lot on Quaker Lake Rd. The Appalachian Trail also runs through here. Together with the other trails, there are miles of hiking to be found here. Many of the trails cross streams and wetlands, but they should be easy to circumnavigate as there are a few bridges and walkways to assist you.

The first three stages are 35mm film canisters, however, they are inside another container. Don’t worry, you wont go crazy wondering what they are once you find them. The final is a cammoed 50cal. ammo can. All of the stages are around 20-30’ from the trails, so stick to the trails until you get close. No need for any real bush whacking on this one. The first stage may prove to be the most challenging, but it is not far from the parking lot. It is near the beautiful gorge and waterfall that welcomes hikers to the preserve. Turn from the Yellow trail on to the Red trail once you cross a bridge to start your journey. Once on the Red trail for a very short time, you will cross another small bridge. The first stage will be straight ahead of you when on this bridge. Look at the rock outcrop about 30' from this bridge. Parents, be sure to keep small children close in this are. The first location is NOT close to the edge of the gorge. You can investigate it at your own discretion.

Stage two will seem a bit far away, but keep an eye on your GPSr as you may be passing near to another cache along the way. ;-) After finding this stage, continue along the trail you’re on until you find another and make the wise, but easy decision which way to go. Stage three puts you on track to find yet another cache in this Preserve. The final will head you back in the right direction, but not necessarily close to your car. This multi is designed to introduce people to some of the many trails here. I hope you enjoy the hike and the hides. Be sure to check out “Hudson’s Folly” if you haven’t already, as this is one of the oldest caches in the area and the reason I found these trails in the first place.

Do to the nature of some of the hides, this cache would be very difficult to find with snow on the ground. So I wouldn’t call this winter friendly, unless we have a mild winter with no accumulation.

Original contents of the cache included a camera, a non-trackable FTF coin, a collectible baseball card tin, a silver bullet, a citronella wristband and assorted kids swag. Two geocoins and a green Jeep TB will join the above. Please do equal trades so that others coming to this cache can find trackables.

Enjoy the hunt.
