How Geocaching Works

This cache is located in the Pawling Nature Preserve in Pawling, New York. There are several trailheads, but the main parking is located on Quaker Lake Rd. This road is mostly dirt and can be very rough, so keep this in mind especially when there has been precipitation. This cache can also be attempted from the Orange/Green trailhead that is located on Sprague Rd at N 41*37.480 W 073*34.352. There is no parking at this trailhead, but there is a small plaza a hundred feet away that should be okay to use.
This cache is a cammoflaged 30cal. ammo can on the Orange trail near an overlook at 900’ elevation. Okay, so I couldn’t actually see the old Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center from this overlook, but I just liked the name and it’s really close by. I hiked to this trail from the Yellow trailhead, so I can’t say how tough a hike it is from Sprague Rd. The trails for the Preserve are very well marked and trail maps can be had at the kiosk at the Yellow trailhead from the parking lot on Quaker Lake Rd. at N41*36.439 W073*33.494. The Appalachian Trail also runs through here. Together with the other trails, there are miles of hiking to be found here. Many of the trails cross streams and wetlands, but they should be easy to circumnavigate as there are a few bridges and walkways to assist you.
Be sure to check out “Hudson’s Folly” if you haven’t already, as this is one of the oldest caches in the area and the reason I found these trails in the first place.
Original contents of the cache included a camera (please take a photo of yourself at the cache and I’ll load the pictures when the camera is full) a citronella wristband, a metal puzzle, a Pop Rocks laboratory, and a plane. Two geocoins and a white Jeep TB will start this cache off right. Please trade evenly so that there are always trackables for others to find. Thanks and happy hunting.
