At the Cache

Please be sure to replace this somewhat unusual cache just as you found it.

Lyon House

Just a short distance beyond this cache stands the historic Lyon House, built in the 1850s before the Civil War. It is considered the oldest house in DeKalb County.

Lyon House

The Lyon family was among the earliest settlers along the South River, and their descendants continued to live here until 2007. The property offers a rare look into a working farm that spanned generations.

Historical accounts indicate that enslaved individuals once lived in the basement of the house. Surrounding outbuildings, including a barn, work shed, and sorghum mill, reflect the self-sustaining nature of the farm. The family raised livestock, cultivated crops like cotton and muscadines, and maintained orchards and beehives.

Today, the house and property are owned by DeKalb County. The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area has supported public archaeology programs here, helping uncover and preserve the stories connected to this site.

A major renovation effort was completed to help preserve the structure for future generations, ensuring that this piece of local history remains part of the landscape.

Looking Beyond

Looking south along the PATH, you can catch a view of Panola Mountain rising in the distance.

Just beyond the Lyon House, the trail passes through a wildlife habitat conservation area where native grasses are being reestablished, continuing the story of how this land evolves over time.
