Just a short distance beyond this cache, you can see the historic Lyon House, built in the 1850's before the Civil War. It is the oldest house in DeKalb County. The Lyons were one of the first settlers along the South River and descendents lived here until 2007. The house and farm are now owned by DeKalv County. Family history notes that slaves once lived in the basement of the house. Outbuildings , such as the barn, work shed , and sorghum mill reflect the self-sustaining nature of the farm. The family raised cows, hogs, cotton, muscadines, and bees and they had a fruit orchard.
The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area sponsors a public archeology program on the Lyon property.
During 2019, the National Heritage Area will complete a major renovation of the dwelling to preserve it for future generations.
Looking south down the bike path, a visitor has a good view of Panola Mountain.
Just beyond the Lyons House, you will pass by a wildlife habitat conservation area where native grasses are being established.

This nature preserve, like other Georgia woodlands, has ticks during all but the winter season. Take precautions that include wearing a hat, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants with legs tucked into socks. Wear light colored clothing for ease of spotting ticks, especially deer ticks that are the size of a pin head. Use bug spray with the chemical DEET and especially spray around the ankle area. Additional info for tick prevention measures.
