Geocache Description:

Nearest parking (avoiding hill climb) about ½ mile stroll to the cache. Some gradient but not too bad, usually nice and dry underfoot. You could also pick up the cache as part of longer walks from Givendale, Bishop Wilton, Worsendale or Cot Nab.

Not really a shire, it’s a dale. Teen Eccythumps named this cache “The Shires” partly because the dale has a Hobbitt connection (we have no idea why but you’ll see what we mean). The other reason is that if you take a stroll through the dale bottom: the remnants of Hagworm Wood, Old Wood, the pond and grassy banks, you might think you are in “The Shires”, well, with a bit of imagination.

This is an open access area called Stonetable Hill, with a view down the dale to Bishop Wilton and across the Vale of York.

The cache is a smallish lock-lock box with a few toys.

The co-ordinates take you to a bench with a view, a place to sit and relax. You will need to find some easy nearby clues that will give you the final co-ordinates. Find clues A, B, C, D and enter them in the final co-ordinates below:

N 53 59.DB0
W 000.46.0CA

TO FIND “A”
Sit on the bench. In front of you is a name of a character from a well known book, how many letters in the name? This is “A” in the final co-ordinates.

TO FIND “B”
The bench has a four digit number on it, what is the second digit? This is “B” in the final co-ordinates.

TO FIND “C”
Add together the total value of the other three digits in the four figure number on the bench, subtract this from the value of the second digit. The number you now have corresponds to “C” in the final co-ordinates.

TO FIND “D”
Look Left (South) and go to the hollowed out tree (N 53 59.264 W 000 46.089). How many words on the plaque? This number corresponds to “D” in the final co-ordinates.
