This cache commemorates the 1960 Olympic Nordic Cross Country ski race. The cross country course was not in Squaw Valley, but here on Tahoe's West Shore.
The 1960 Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley. Anyone doing a search for geocaches in the area will find a few olympic commemorative caches, mostly in Squaw Valley.
The cross country course went from Sugar Pine Point State Park over to Homewood. There is little information available on the internet about the course, except that there was some controversy because the course was too hard. There are commemorative trail markers here and there on some of the community trails. You may see one afixed to a tree depending on what route you take.
This cache sits atop a ridge, next to an old road. I think this old road may have been the highest point of the course. At any rate, the cache is a nice location near the intersection of the road and a well used neighborhood trail. Cachers will be treated to views of Rubicon Peak, Lake Tahoe, and the Quail face area of Ellis Peak.
The intent of this cache was to make it accessible all year round, and to encourage winter cachers. (It is a Winter Olympic cache after all). The cache is about 6 feet off the ground to make it easier to find in the winter. It is accessible to mountain bikers, hikers, snowshoers, and back country skiers. There is no need to go cross country in the summer until you are about 100 feet or so from the cache. In the winter, go cross country all you like (fresh tracks are highly encouraged).
I can think of at least four established trails that will get you to this cache. Sugar Pine Point state sark, and McKinney Rubicon road are two of them. There are also neighborhood trails in Tahoma that have perhaps the best views on the way to the cache. Do a reality check with a map. Be aware of parking restrictions in snowy conditions.
Despite its proximity to McKinney Rubicon Road (i.e. the Rubicon trail), this cache is not accessible by jeep, atv, or snowmobile. You'll have to walk up the from the road (less than a mile each way).
Please make sure the bright green geocache sticker is placed back against the object it is hung on. It sticks out quite a bit.
