Geocache Description:

A local map enthusiast is thinning his collection of antique maps and is using this cache to share his treasures with other cachers. Included you will find a number of maps that were printed in the 1800's and 1900's from all around the world. These maps are not contemporary reprints, but actual antique maps. Many of the maps that I am including are valued at about $35 per map, and it is for that reason that I will keep the inventory limited at all times. However, I will periodically check this cache and make sure that it is well stocked. If I find that people are taking more than ONE map per logged visit, I will remove the cache. If you'd like to learn about the map you've taken, please scan it, upload it, and send the cache owner an email requesting information.

Don't think of this search for the cache as just another find...think of it as if you are back in the age of discovery, surveying the countryside. Cartographers scoured the countryside documenting every inlet, every winding trail, the depths of the harbors in order to provide accurate information for future travelers.

Many of the maps that you'll find in this cache identify places and names that have disappeared from modern maps. Some maps have wonderful descriptions or stories written about a location that may not have yet been officially named. Political borders have changed. A map printed in the U.S. may be different than a map printed in Germany for political reasons.

An interesting piece of trivia: The companies that printed these maps often protected their copyrights by including a fake name somewhere on the map. For instance, a street map of a city might include a street that really doesn't exist, but would not likely cause confusion to someone traveling in that area. If they discovered that "fake" street on another company's map, they had proof in hand that their competitor had stolen their map to use as their own.

So enjoy your maps! Take some time to look at them carefully. Search the internet for their history, value, etc. As technology is used to develop new digital maps, these antique maps will become lost treasures.

There are a couple of rules:

1. Please do NOT park in the church's main parking lot on Sundays.

2. Please park in the church's auxiliary parking lot located at N36 52.106 W076 05.351.

3. Stay away from the cell tower facility.

4. Please TAKE ONLY ONE MAP per logged visit so that everyone has a chance to get a map, and please leave something in return.

I have been given permission by the pastor of the Lynnhaven United Methodist Church to place this cache. I would appreciate it if everyone did their best to show the members of this congregation that cachers are discrete and environmentally conscious by performing some CITO duties while visiting this cache.

Also, beware of local wildlife and plant life and dress appropriately. The cache is located in a damp location.

I've also included a bottle of bug spray to use while visiting (PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE FROM THE CACHE), a number of travel bugs to swap and in case the kids are with you I've included some pirate swag.

*** If you take a map, please include a description of the map when you log your find.

As you do with other caches, if you take something, please leave something in return!

Enjoy!
