Geocache Description:

This cache is in memory of three-year-old Carol Ann Pomranky. In July of 1948 she was playing on the back porch of her parents cabin just below the tower site when a black bear grabbed her from the porch. The child’s mother, alerted by her scream, watched as the bear carried her into the surrounding woods. The mother took off after the bear but was unable to locate it and quickly called her husband at the Raco Forest Headquarters, where he was working for the day.

Quickly a posse of local men was formed and a search was begun. The child’s body was discovered later in the afternoon by Alex VanLuven, a local trapper and hunter, Wayne Weston, and Harry Holdsworth. VanLuven released his dog, then he and Holdsworth returned to the cabin with the little girl while Wayne Weston waited at the scene. Shortly after the other men left, the bear returned and was shot by Weston.

A complete story from the July 9th 1948 Sault Evening News is available on microfilm at the Baliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. You could also read more about it in Ben East’s book BEARS.

The cache is located off the Mission Hill or West Tower Road (FS 3151). From there turn North on FS 3152. You will come to an intersection and from there go up the hill. The day we set the cache you could drive within 100 feet of the cache in any vehicle but the conditions of the road could change so use your own judgment.

Our GPS units took a while to settle down and accuracy was no better than twenty-five feet. You may loose satellite coverage with the hardwood canopy in the summer months. Elevation was 1013 feet.

The cache is a cammo 6”x 8” x 3” lock and lock box with outdoor type trade goods in it, as well as an assortment of other swag. Please rehide as well or better than you found it.

There is a network of great trails here. One will take you north to a spot that overlooks Whitefish Bay and the surrounding area. Stick around and enjoy them.
