Stolpern in Mödling / Stumbling through Mödling
Mödling war in der Zeit vor 1938 eine der großen jüdischen Gemeinden im Wiener Umland. Die gesamte Gemeinde, ca 300 Personen, wurde 1941/42 deportiert und großteils ermordet.
Im August 2006 wurden vor den Wohnhäusern einiger jüdischen Familien pflasterstein-ähnliche Erinnerungsplaketten („Stolpersteine“) in den Gehweg eingelassen, um an die ehemaligen Bewohner zu erinnern.
Schüler eines Mödlinger Gymnasiums haben die Lebensgeschichten von 14 Personen nachverfolgt und eine Dokumentation zusammengestellt, die ihr hier als pdf-file downloaden und nachlesen könnt (download from Dropbox).
Übrigens ist der Mödlinger Friedhof am Ortsausgang Richtung Guntramsdorf ist einer der ganz wenigen Friedhöfe Österreichs, der sowohl christliche als auch jüdische Gräber enthält und noch intakt und unzerstört ist. Kurzer Besichtigungs-stopp im Vorbeifahren lohnt sich.
Der Cacheweg ist im Stadtgebiet, eben und kann mit Kinderwagen gut begangen werden. Fußweg vom Cache zum empfohlenen Parkplatz ist max. 10 Min. Gesamte Gehstrecke ca 1km. Stage 1 ist wegen Großbaustelle bis auf weiteres ausgefallen. Ihr könnt das Cache-mobile gleich am Museumsplatz (N48° 05.182/ E16° 17.285, werktags bis 18h Kurzparkzone) abstellen und mit Stage 2 beginnen. Von dort ist alles andere auf kurzen Wegen und kinderwagentauglich erreichbar.

Die einzige nicht-jüdische Station des Caches, zur Erinnerung an die inzwischen selig gesprochene Krankenschwester Sr. Helene Kafka, die wegen ihres Eintretens für ihren Glauben und den ihrer Mitmenschen verhaftet und 1943 in Wien von den Nazis enthauptet wurde.
Der Stolperstein ist baustellen-halber bis auf weiteres entfernt. Der Wert für A = 16.

Before the Nazi-era, Mödling was one of the major communities of Jewish life in the Vienna region. The entire Jewish population, approx 300 persons, were deported in 1941 and 1942, most were killed in the death camps, very few survivors are known to date.
In August 2006, cobblestone plaques („stumbling stones“) were placed into the sidewalk in front of the houses of 14 Jewish families, in order to commemorate the deported Mödling citizens.
Students of a Mödling high-school researched the history of 14 Jewish families and published a short documentation, which you can download and read here (in German language only): (Download from Dropbox).
The cache-walk is easy to walk and can be done also with kids and strollers. Walking distance from the Final to the recommended Parking is max 10 min. Total walking distance is less than 1km.
Stage 1 is out-of-order due to a major construction project. Leave your cache-mobil at the Museum (N48° 05.182/ E16° 17.285) and start directly at Stage 2. Parking fee applies on weekdays until 6 p.m., else free parking.

The only non-Jewish person on this commemorative walk is Sister Helen Kafka, who was arrested for defending her faith and that of her co-citizens in 1942 and beheaded by the Nazis in 1943.
The stumbling-stone has been removed for construction works until further notice. The value for A = 16.
