There is an old folklore that has been passed down through the years that Long John Silver buried treasure in the Palos Forest Preserve region.
One dark moonless night Long John Silver and his crew of pirates navigated his ship, the Hispaniola, up the Cal Sag Channel. Long John Silver was running from the law. His ship contained a Kings treasure. Long John was looking for the perfect spot to bury the stolen treasure.
Long John spied a grove of gnarled trees. With the ship anchored Long John and his crew silently left the ship and came up on the shore. They walked about until Long John found the perfect spot to bury his treasure. He then sent his crew back to the ship. The crew of ruthless pirates rowed boatloads of heavy chests to the shore.
Long John thought the area was deserted that moonless night but there were two hidden trembling men watching them. The men had been fishing when they saw the Hispaniola come into view. They hid and watched in amazement as the pirates brought ashore the treasure chests.
Long John silver led his men away from shore and they disappeared into the grove of gnarled trees and bramble bushes. The men stayed frozen in their hiding spot. The pirates came back before dawn and rowed back to the Hispaniola and sailed away.
The two men who had been hiding stayed quiet about what they saw. Each night for a week they came back with lanterns and shovels searching for the pirate’s booty. Then one night they found the pirates hiding place. There was more treasure than the two men could spend in a life time.
They decided to take only enough to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. They didn't think when Long John came back for his treasure that he would notice what they took because the treasure was so large. They loaded up their sacks with rubies, diamonds, pearls and gold. The men covered the chests back up with dirt.
They drew a map of where Long John's treasure was buried and then ripped it into two pieces. Each man took a piece of the map and set off in different directions to bury their
stolen portions of the Pirates treasure along with their half of the map.
