Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. At the posted coordinates is at the start of Dennison Run Trail and the start of the Letterbox directions. This cache will take you on about a ~5 mile winding hike, round trip, through SGL039 and Clear Creek State Forest - Allegheny River Tract.

The Allegheny River Tract of Clear Creek State Forest is located in Venango County. The Allegheny River Tract is sandwiched between State Game Lands #039, and the western shore of the Allegheny River. This 3200 acre tract of land was purchased by the Commonwealth in the 1970’s with the intent of creating a new state park to be known as “Allegheny Gorge State Park”. The funds never materialized, and this tract was added to the Clear Creek State Forest. According to the Bureau of Forestry, the Allegheny River Tract is intersected with 27 miles of trails and has 6 miles of shoreline on the Allegheny River.
Dennison Run is rated exceptional value (EV) in stream quality by the PA Fish & Boat Commission due to its pristine aquatic characteristics.

The Allegheny River Tract is easily accessed from PA 8 north of Barkeyville. Exit at PA 308 (Bullion/Pearl) and turn northwest toward Pearl. Make a right on to “Old PA 8” for .4 miles. Turn right on to Dennison Run Road (T-368). You will stay on Dennison Run Road for 1.7 miles. You will then hang a right on to Dewoody Road (T-371). There is a parking lot (N41 16.132 W79 52.322) at the end of Dewoody Road located on State Game Lands #039 to start your adventure. Head south from the parking lot along a gated Game Commission access road. Stay on the access road for .25 miles. There is a sign off to your left for Overlook Trail. Take this trail to the left, and into the woods. The trails are clearly marked with signs. When you reach the intersection of the Bullion Run Iron Furnace Trail, Overlook Trail and Dennison Run trail you will be at the posted coordinates.

Head North and follow the Dennison Run trail down into the valley.
Follow the trail past the 4 suspension bridges to the next intersection of trails.
Go South West and follow the trail for about 250ft.
You will see an old logging road spit off at about 195°.
Follow the old logging road (which can be overgrown with ferns depending on the time of the year) for about 100ft to a lone 5" tree on the edge of the trail.
From the lone tree, at a bearing of about 40° you will see another 5" tree about 10 feet away.
The cache is under rocks in between the two trees. Please be respectful of the flora.

There is a log book and stamp with stamp pad. Please Stamp & sign the log book, and use our stamp to stamp your book. Please do not take the stamp or stamp pad, they are not trade items.

Since this hike will take you through Pennsylvania State Game Lands and State Forest, encountering hunters is likely. Florescent Orange is recommended at all times, but is required during May, October, November, December and January.

As with all wilderness areas in Pennsylvania, please be aware that there might be bears or poisonous snakes.

This is one of 2 caches that you can do in Clear Creek State Forest that can be found from the same parking area.

Permit Renewed Until: 18 MAY 2011
