Beavers be dammed! Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is accessible by water only! The parking coordinates are N 42 56.052' W073 47.434'. You can also park along the shoulder on Route 9 if the lot is full. If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing this is the cache for you. There is also plenty of fishing to be had along the way. Wildlife is in abundance here, you will probably see bald eagles, great blue heron, osprey, ducks, geese, red-winged blackbirds, beavers and turtles.
Paddle straight across Round Lake (south east) to the mouth of Anthony Kill Creek at N 42 55.784' W073 46.606. This is where the real fun begins. This meandering creek takes you with a slight current past beaver huts and great blue heron nests. During extremely low water a little extra effort may be required to get past the two beaver dams along the way.
You'll be looking for a waterproof matchstick case. Bring a pen with you to sign the log and please return the micro just as you found it. This is one of our favorite paddles, we hope you enjoy it.
After reaching the cache you can continue your trip on the Cooley Kill Creek that intersects the Andrews Kill. Due to the new beaver dam this is only accessible by crossing a narrow (20' wide) peninsula to the right of the dam. You can paddle upstream on this creek for a couple miles.
As of 5.17.10 there is a large tree blocking Cooley Kill creek shortly after getting started. It may be passable with some effort/skill. You may also be able to explore northeast (downstream) on the Cooley Kill but I have not done that yet.
