The station was opened on 6.7.1874 under the name of Tipton and was renamed Tipton St johns in February 1881. It was run by the Sidmouth Railway Company. The line was closed to passengers on 6.3.1967 and closed completely on 8.5.1967. It is said that it was the least important station on the Sidmouth branch line.
The cache is at ground level on the S side of the bridge.
