Geocache Description:

The Headlands was established in the late 1950's when Roger McCormick hired a helicopter and dropped 50lb. sacks of flour to mark the boundaries of a property he desired to purchase.

The Park contains approximately 550 acres of pristine woodlands, more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and many species of rare and endangered plant life. Visitors to the Headlands may experience sightings of the many wild animals native to the area including: bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer, wild turkeys, coyotes and occasionally a black bear. Marked nature trails guide hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and nature photographers to experience the park throughout the changing seasons.

There are two ways in which to reach this cache. There is also a pavilion with brochure maps available just as you drive into the park which may be helpful familiarizing yourself with the park and the trails. Please leave the cache as you found it.. leave no trace.

Take a cool shaded hike along the Voyagers trail through a old growth of cedar or walk along the limestone fossiled beach littered with the colorful glacial drop boulders that arrived from different areas from across the upper peninsula and from as far away as the Keweenaw Peninsula. These boulders were deposited some 14,000 years ago from a ride on the Wisconsin Ice Sheet. Check out the high ridge of limestone the lake left as it receded thousands of years ago.

Mossy Rock is a limestone boulder the size of a car covered with lovely soft green moss. This boulder oddly enough also has cedar trees growing on top of it.

Parking coordinates: N45° 46.750 W034°47.393

Trail 1: Voyager Trail will shortly fork to the left this trail leads to the beach.

Beach coordinates: N45°46.880’W084°47.534’

Trail 2: Take the Voyager Trail until the trail intersects about 0.7 miles NE approximate reading N45°47.191W084°46.803 and head north to the beach. Walk along the beach SW to find the cache.

Warning: Stay on the beach or trail. I would not advise cutting through the cedar forest to find Mossy Rock as the terrain is rough and not easy going and you could get lost.
