The falcon was being persued after escaping from the ice world of Hoth. Han was trying to outrun an imperal stardestroyer when they found themselves entering an asteroid field. He knew his passanger needed to escape. He risked all and entered the asteroids.
Evading capture and entering one of the larger asteroids he was successful.
