Geocache Description:

Part of the Trans Canada Trail in the Cowichan Valley. Road access is only 300m away, an easy walk to the North end of the Kinsol Trestle along the Trans Canada Trail.
Satelite accuracy was 10m so use the HINT if you must!

In 1910 the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway put out a contract to build a rail line from Sydney through Victoria and onto Barkley Sound. By 1914 timber had already been stacked alongside the Koksilah River at the site of the Kinsol Trestle which had been named after a nearby Copper Mine, the King Solomon. In April, 1920 the Koksilah River had been bridged and by 1924 the track had reached Cowichan. The Kinsol Trestle remained active for over 55 years, threatened by forest fires and floods until the last train crossed in the late 1970's.
The longest wooden testle in the British Commonwealth at a height of 38 meters the Kinsol Trestle is possibly at threat again today. In April 2007 an announcement was made that provincial funding had been made available through LocalMotion to replace the Kinsol Trestle with a new and safer structure as a corridor for the Trans Canada Trail This along with funding from the Ministry Of Transportation it had committed to dismantle the trestle.
A restoration firm believes the trestle could be restored for less then projected costs and the push to preserve the Kinsol Trestle is still very much alive!

To restore or to replace, the fate of the longest wooden train trestle in Canada is still very much up in the air.
I encourage cachers and non-cachers alike to visit this grand engineering feat while it still stands proud. It stands as a very big part of our history here on the coast.

THE KINSOL TRESTLE WILL BE FEATURED ON THE 2007 BC GEOCOIN AVAILABLE THIS JUNE .
